Ratargul Swamp Forest Ratargul Swamp Forest is the only freshwater swamp forest and wildlife sanctuary in Bangladesh, located at Gowainghat in Sylhet. The forest covers an area of 3,325.61 acres, of which 504 acres were declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1983.

There are only 22 freshwater wetlands in the world. There are two in the Indian subcontinent. One in Sri Lanka, the other in Bangladesh. This beautiful forest is comparable to the only Amazon. Like the Amazon, the trees here stay under water for 4 to 6 months a year.

Although this forest is basically a natural forest, later Bangladesh Forest Department has planted various species of water tolerant trees including cane, kadam, hijal, murta. Besides, in this submerged forest there are Hijal, Karach and Varun trees, there are Pithali, Arjuna, Chatim, Guti Jam, there are also bot trees.
There are many snake habitats in this forest. There are also monkeys, guisaps, white bucks, kana bucks, mashranga, tia, bulbuli, pankauri, dhupi, pigeons, kites and hawks.
